Which of my assets are subject to Zakāt?

6 min read

Zakāt falls on wealth that grows or is held as value, not on the things you use day to day. Here's a plain-language guide to the common assets, and where scholars differ. Confirm the details for your situation with a scholar you trust.

Cash & savings

Fully zakatable, chequing, savings, cash on hand, and money in digital wallets, at 2.5%.

Gold & silver

Zakatable by weight at current value. Worn jewelry is debated: Ḥanafī counts it; Mālikī, Shāfiʿī and Ḥanbalī generally exempt it if in genuine personal use.

Stocks, ETFs & funds

Depends on why you hold them. Actively traded for price gains → 2.5% on full market value. Held long-term for growth/dividends → 2.5% on a 'zakatable ratio' of the value (~25% proxy, or your fund's factsheet), your share of the company's cash, receivables and inventory. See the stocks article.

Retirement accounts

Defined-contribution plans (RRSP, 401(k), IRA, SIPP) are zakatable on the zakatable proportion of the fund (~25%, or your fund's factsheet). Being locked until retirement does not remove the obligation. Defined-benefit / final-salary pensions aren't zakatable until received. Some scholars allow waiting until the money is accessible, that choice is yours in the calculator. See the retirement article.

Business assets

Zakatable: cash, inventory held for sale, and recoverable receivables. Not the fixed tools of the trade (premises, equipment, vehicles).

Crypto

Most contemporary scholars treat holdings as a tradeable asset at current market value → 2.5%. This is genuinely new territory, so confirm with a scholar.

Investment property

If bought to resell: the full value is zakatable. If rented out: usually only the saved rental income, not the building itself.

Money owed to you

Loans you gave and trade debts are zakatable each year while outstanding. 'Weak' receivables (unpaid salary, inheritance, claims, settlements, are zakatable only once you actually receive them.

Not zakatable

Your home, personal car, clothing, furniture and tools you use are not wealth held for growth.
