Privacy Policy
Zakat Simple (“we,” “us,” “our”) provides a tool to help Muslims calculate their annual Zakāt, track their giving, and learn about the rulings. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have. We have built the app to collect as little as possible.
1. Who this applies to
This policy applies to the Zakat Simple website and apps at zakatsimple.com (and related domains) and to anyone who uses them.
2. Information we collect
- Account information. If you create an account, we store your email address (and, if you sign in with Google, your name and email as provided by Google) to authenticate you and save your data.
- Information you enter. The financial figures you enter to calculate your Zakāt, your niṣāb date, your donation log, and any receipt images you choose to upload. If you choose to sync, this information is stored in your account so it is available across your devices. If you keep it on this device, it stays in that device’s storage and we never receive it. See section 4.
- Device-only storage. You can calculate your Zakāt without an account at all. Your figures stay in that device's local storage and are never sent to our servers. If you create an account, you choose how your Zakāt data is stored: keep it on your device, where it stays in local storage and is never uploaded, or sync it, and it is stored in our database under your account.
- Technical information. Our hosting and infrastructure providers process standard technical data (such as IP address and request logs) needed to operate and secure the service. We do not use this for advertising or tracking.
- Page views. We count visits ourselves, with no cookies and no third-party analytics service. For each page view we store the page address, the domain that linked you (never the full address or your search terms), your country, and a random number that lasts only until you close the tab. This is not linked to your account and is deleted after 90 days. In the app we also record which screens you reached and whether a calculation was completed, so we can see where the tool confuses people. We never record any figure you enter, which assets you hold, or your currency.
3. How we use your information
- To provide the calculator, save your figures, and show your results across sessions and devices.
- To authenticate you and keep your account secure.
- To operate, maintain, and improve the service.
- To respond to you if you contact us for support.
We do not sell your information, show you advertising, or share your personal data with third parties for their own marketing.
4. How your information is stored and protected
You choose how your Zakāt data is handled at the moment you first save a calculation, before any account exists. The two options are:
- Kept on this device. Your Zakāt figures stay in this device’s local storage and are never uploaded to us. Your account is used only to sign you in.
- Synced to your account. Your Zakāt data is stored with our database provider and protected by per-user access controls, so it is private to your account. We do not access it in the ordinary course of running the service.
Information is encrypted in transit (HTTPS) and encrypted at rest by our storage provider. No method of storage or transmission is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable measures to protect your information.
Backups & your data. So your records aren’t lost: on the mobile apps, your data may be included in your device’s normal operating-system backup (Android Auto Backup / Google Drive on Android; iCloud device backup on iOS), depending on your device’s own settings. That backup is handled by your device, not by us, and we cannot read it. How strongly it is protected is set by Apple or Google rather than by us: on Android 9 and later these backups are end-to-end encrypted with your device credential, while on iOS that requires Advanced Data Protection to be switched on. You can also download a manual backup file at any time and keep it wherever you like (Google Drive, iCloud, email). If you sync, we additionally keep a short server-side version history (the last several saved versions) so you can restore an earlier one; that history lives in the same protected database and is deleted when you delete your account.
5. Service providers we use
We rely on a small number of trusted providers to run the service:
- Supabase: authentication, database, and storage of your account data and receipt images.
- Netlify: website and app hosting.
- Google: only if you choose “Sign in with Google,” to verify your identity. We receive your name and email; we do not receive your Google password.
- Stripe, only if you choose to make an optional support payment. Card details are entered on Stripe’s own pages and handled entirely by Stripe; card numbers never reach our systems. We receive confirmation that a payment succeeded, not your card details. This is a payment to support the tool. It is not Zakāt and not a charitable donation.
- Market price sources (e.g. gold-api.com and frankfurter.app), used to fetch public gold/silver prices and exchange rates for the niṣāb. These requests do not include any of your personal information.
6. Data retention and your choices
- You can edit or delete the figures and donations you enter at any time within the app.
- You can export your data from the app at any time.
- You can request deletion of your account and associated data by contacting us (see below). If you keep data on your device only, it is removed when you delete the app or clear its storage; deleting your account also clears the copy on this device and removes any synced copy and its version history.
7. Your rights
Depending on where you live (for example under Canada’s PIPEDA, the EU/UK GDPR, or Australia’s Privacy Act and Australian Privacy Principles), you may have the right to access, correct, or delete your personal information, and to withdraw consent. To exercise these rights, contact us using the details below.
You can permanently delete your account and all associated data at any time, from inside the app (Settings → Delete my account) or via our public deletion page at zakatsimple.com/delete-account, which also explains how to request deletion by email without signing in.
One thing is kept, and only in part: if you have written to us for support, we keep the message itself so our record of a conversation is not one-sided, but your email address is removed from it when you delete your account. Support messages you sent while signed out are not linked to your account, so tell us the address you used if you want those removed too.
If you are in the United Kingdom or the European Economic Area: we process your information on the basis of performing our service for you (running your account and calculations) and our legitimate interest in keeping the service secure. You additionally have the rights to data portability (a copy of your data in a usable format, the app’s export feature provides this), to restrict or object to certain processing, and to lodge a complaint with your supervisory authority, in the UK, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk. We do not use your information for automated decision-making or profiling, and we do not sell it.
8. Children’s privacy
Zakat Simple is intended for adults managing their own (and their household’s) Zakāt. It is not directed to children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information directly from children. Where the app lets you calculate Zakāt for a household member, that information is entered and controlled by the adult account holder.
9. International users
The app is designed for users in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia. Your information may be processed and stored by our providers in data centres located outside your country (including the United States). Where required, for example for transfers of UK or EEA data, our providers rely on appropriate safeguards such as standard contractual clauses. By using the app, you consent to this transfer where permitted by law.
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the “Last updated” date above, and significant changes will be reflected within the app or on this page.
11. Contact us
If you have questions about this policy or your data, contact us at nabeeli.biz@gmail.com.
