Is there Zakāt on cryptocurrency?
For ordinary coins and payment tokens such as Bitcoin or Ether, Zakāt is due on the full value of your holding on your Zakāt day, whatever your reason for holding them. For tokens that stand for something else, such as a share in a project or access to a service, the treatment follows whatever sits underneath. This is still a new area, so it is worth confirming your own situation with a scholar.

How is a share valued for Zakāt?
| Position held by | Ruling |
|---|---|
| Contemporary ruling | Shares bought to trade are trade stock: Zakat on the full market value. |
| Contemporary ruling | Shares held for income are looked through to the company’s own zakatable assets, which is what the ratio estimates. |
